Grid 1313 barred grid with 180 symmetry. There is a space to be completed under the grid.
Preamble 11dn gives the general use for eleven unclued thematic entries. Seven of these are each linked with another entry, whose clue indicates their defined use. Thirty-four clues have an extra letter. In clue order, these can be decoded, using 30 as a guide and noting gaps. This, plus 11dn, must be written below the grid to show the link between the definitions of the other four thematic entries. Solvers must also highlight thematic entry 11 (in 30).
Solution Notes
(Hide Solution)
The theme is computer programming languages, seven of which are indicated by the surfaces of the associated clues (to other words). The extra letters in thiry-four clues (all Is or Os) can be interpreted in a binary code (like ASCII, but starting with A=1) as HIGH-LEVEL. The remaining four thematic answers are the high-level programming languages PASCAL, PERL, PYTHON and C. The latter is to be highlighted in 30ac (ASCII) and is represented as 11 in the ASCII-like binary code.
