Title Only Connect Two
Setter The Tall'n
Series The Listener
Number 4317
Date 25/10/2014
Grid 1313 grid with clue numbers but no bars.
Preamble Eight rows contain an unclued word that either links, or is the central element of a sequence suggested by, the two clued entries in the same row. Six down answers must be relocated so that three columns form a sequence. Six pairs of answers must have certain letters removed to form the word for entry. The grid is not symmetrical; bars are not to be entered. The Chambers Dictionary (2011) is the primary reference; one answer is an abbreviation.
Solution Notes
(Hide Solution)
The treatments are variants of the rounds in the BBC quiz show Only Connect. In rows 1 to 4, the unclued word combines with the other two to make a pair of words that overlap. Sequential triplets are suggested in rows 6 (game, set, match), 8 (Greek alphabet), 9 (branches, trunk, root) and 12 (birdie, par, bogey). In the middle three columns entries are moved to form six royal houses. Vowels are removed from answer pairs to give new words.
