Title Coded Message
Setter The Tall'n
Series The Listener
Number 4359
Date 15/08/2015
Grid 1313 barred grid with 180 symmetry.
Preamble The six unclued entries comprise a ten-word message indicating by whom, where and how a wartime achievement was made. In the initial grid, the message is entered in a simple cipher, causing misprints in the entries that cross it; the wordplay for these entries leads to the misprinted form. Solvers must decipher the unclued entries, restoring the crossing answers, and then complete the message by unscrambling three of its words that are jumbled (showing girl gang live unbelted). Finally, solvers must highlight a six-letter word that was sent in deceptive messages towards the end of the war. The Chambers Dictionary (2014) is the primary reference.
Solution Notes
(Hide Solution)
The message, initially advanced by three places alphabetically, was TURING DECODED ENIGMA IN HUT EIGHT, BLETCHLEY PARK, USING BOMBE (his name for the decoding machine). Unscrambling UNGIRT, MOB BE and GAMINE produces new words in the crossing entries. In WWII, the Allies sent false messages to mislead the enemy into expecting D-Day attacks concentrated at CALAIS rather than Normandy.
