Title Name That Tune
Setter The Ace of Hearts
Series The Listener
Number 4498
Date 14/04/2018
Grid Circular grid comprising six rings. The outer three rings consist of 39 cells, the next two consist of 18 cells and the inner ring 13 cells. There is a space to be completed in the centre captioned Singer.
Preamble Answers in the perimeter are clued by wordplay only and form a cryptic representation of a song, the first two lines of which appear clockwise in the third ring from the perimeter. The name of a singer (two words) who had a hit with this song must be written in the central space. From each radial answer a letter must be omitted wherever it occurs before entry in the grid; the wordplay in these clues refers to the 6-letter residue to be entered. The radial entries (twenty-one reading inwards and eighteen reading outwards) start at a point to be determined and continue from the outer edge if they hit the inner edge, or vice versa. The omitted letters spell out a nickname and two other hits for the singer. The Chambers Dictionary (2016) is the primary reference; 17 is in the Oxford Dictionary of English.
