Preamble In EXPRESS FROM PADDINGTON, nine across and nine down clues each have a secondary indication (eg anagram) that refers to a letter not actually in the answer. For example: "Meals taste strange (4)" leads to TEAS with T surplus. These surplus letters, in the presented order, spell out an entry in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (4th edition) that explains the four unclued perimeter lights. Unchecked letters in these lights give DG'S DOZY PRE-BP. Two proper nouns not in Chambers (1993) can be found on the same page of Collins; 1dn is in the OED.
