Number 4144
Date 02/07/2011
Grid 13×13 carte blanche grid.
Preamble Clues (which are presented in the usual order) contain a misprint of one letter in the definition. The correct letters spell out some thematic locations which collectively hint at the whereabouts of the subject. One cell will contain two letters and must be suitably divided. An overlapping thematic year is also present, and solvers must fill four isolated cells to reveal a resonant title. The grid pattern, which has 180-degree symmetry, must be shown but inserting cell numbers is optional. The Chambers Dictionary (2008) is the primary reference.

This puzzle commemorated the 50th anniversary of the death of Ernest Hemingway on 2 July 1961. Corrections to misprints in the definitions spell out "Sloppy Joe's Bar, Key West; The Ritz Bar, Paris; El Floridita, Havana", all bars famously frequented by Hemingway. This hints that Hemingway (heMINgWay) is to be found in the bars of the grid. The central cell is required to be split in two by a diagonal bar to give the N of Hemingway and the separator between 7 down and 31 down. The year 1961 also appears in the grid with the 19 overlapping the I and g of Hemingway. The isolated cells have to be filled to complete the "resonant" title For Whom the Bell Tolls.
