Preamble The definition part of each clue must be modified before solving by the withdrawal of a letter and, wherever possible, the processing of the remaining letters (sometimes with changes in punctuation and/or capitalisation) to form a new word. When read in thematic order, the withdrawn letters define the title of a work, one line of which explains how solvers must modify the initially-filled grid (by means of the withdrawal of four characters, affecting a total of 31 cells) revealing the RANK OUTSIDERS and so identifying its author. One entry is an abbreviation, and Chambers Dictionary (2011) is recommended.
