Preamble Entries start from their numbered cells. Solvers must decide their lengths and directions across or down. The grid does not display symmetry. Before solving, one letter must fall from a word in the definition in one clue to another word in the wordplay in its successor, sometimes accompanied by changes in punctuation and spacing. Modified clues consist of real words (one a shortened form) but seldom read sensibly. Clue 1 only loses a letter and clue 47 only receives one. In clue order the 46 letters spell out an instruction that directly addresses solvers, followed by its author. The instruction explains how to modify four pairs of answers (always leaving real words) before entry. Solvers must enter only those bars that reveal a thematic location framing the author's guide (six cells) that must be highlighted. All answers and entries are in Chambers bar 12, which can be found in Collins.
