Preamble
Rasputin is a triumvirate of setters. The first setter wrote 27 clues in which the wordplay leads to the answer with an extra letter that is not entered in the grid. In clue order, these letters spell out a line of verse. The second setter used the preceding and following lines of this stanza to create differences between the defined grid entry and the wordplay in each of the remaining clues. The third setter used the logic contained in the final line of the stanza to fix a particular letter in one of two positions in the leading diagonal, thus resolving which of two alternative messages (involving 11 clashes) must be submitted, producing a timely regional salutation. All three noticed that the author of the verse might cryptically suggest a date for the next Rasputin compilation.
