DifficultyA
Grid 12×12 barred grid with 180° symmetry.
Preamble A light bulb joke consists of a question in the form ‘how many [type of person]s
does it take to change a light bulb?’, the punch line being the number of that type of person and a reason why. For example:
Question: How many crime writers does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: Two – one to change it, and one to give a final unexpected twist.
Five thematic clues consist of the punch line to such a joke. Solvers must enter into the grid, where they will fit, the type of person contained in the question to the joke. The grid entries for these clues are always singular – so the grid entry for the above example would be CRIME WRITER.
Wordplay in each normal clue gives the answer plus an extra letter that is not entered into the grid. In clue order these explain why, according to 18a 6a, the unfortunate 32A 17D, a 34A 33D, should have used the 27A.
