DifficultyC
Grid 12×11 barred grid with 180° symmetry. Five cells are inscribed with circles. There is a space to be completed under the grid.
Preamble The answers to eight clues must be entered thematically. All other clues have a misprint in the definition, and one letter must be omitted from the answer, wherever it occurs, before entry into the grid. Wordplay in these clues refers to grid entries. The omitted letters in clue order, followed by the correct letters from misprints, also in clue order, spell out part of an old Irish saying. This saying, along with the discovery of the theme from the eight thematic clues, should help solvers to identify a potential 'great escapee' (a jumble of the last six letters is given by the circled cells in the grid) whose identity (11, hyphenated) must be written below the grid. Numbers in brackets refer to the lengths of grid entries. Chambers does not give a variant spelling of 29 or common parlance answers at 10 and 23.
