Title Legend
Setter Shackleton
Series Enigmatic Variations
Number 1190
Date 30/08/2015
Grid 13×13 barred grid with 180° symmetry. There is an extra row of seven squares above the grid.
Preamble Each clue has a single misprint in the definition that must be corrected before solving; corrections, when interspersed with the losing letters of five clashes, spell out two messages. The across message applies only to a particular square region in the grid; an adjacent rectangle, which contains all five clashes, must be treated symbolically using only initial cells. The down message provides the LEGEND for five images to be (loosely) drawn, one in each of the first five uppermost cells (correspondingly placed from left to right); a deduced image must be drawn in the sixth cell and its description written in the seventh, thus completing the LEGEND. Finally, solvers must shade the square, rectangle and upper row. Chambers Dictionary (2014) is recommended.
