Setter Dysart
Series The Listener
Number 3891
Date 19/08/2006
Grid 12×13 barred grid with 180° symmetry. There is a space to be completed under the grid.
Preamble The wordplay to each across clue indicates the answer with an extra letter that is not entered in the grid. These letters in clue order spell out part of a four-line speech that influences certain features of the puzzle. Numbers in brackets refer to the number of cells in the grid at each clue number. After initial completion, the grid has several contiguous empty cells which must be filled with letters removed from elsewhere in the grid (where they were prematurely placed), leaving another set of contiguous empty cells in the final grid. Solvers must highlight the relocated letters and another word of twelve letters appropriately arranged in contiguous cells, so as to illustrate an idea central to the speech. Finally, solvers must identify the two-word thematic phrase (6, 4) that accounts for the puzzle's title and write it in the space at the foot of the grid. Chambers Dictionary (2003) is the primary reference.
