Preamble For thematic reasons a sequence of consecutive letters must be removed from each of six answers (all but one of which are across) before entry in the grid; in most cases removals do not leave proper words. Answers to three down clues are one letter too short for their allotted space and their entries will leave empty cells initially. Numbers in brackets refer to the space available in the grid.
Solvers must complete the cleansing by locating a final thematic item in the grid, erasing it and using its letters to complete 24ac, forming a declaration of the grid's pure state. Solvers must resist the temptation to add anything to the newly vacated cells, which must be left blank.
