Title Magnum Opus: The Name of the Rose
Setter Salamanca
Series The Listener
Number 3228
Date 13/11/1993
Grid The grid, captioned THE AEDIFICIUM, consists of a 12×12 barred grid without symmetry, without the central 4×4 block, but with additional blocks on each corner consisting of 13 or 14 cells. The nine corners and sides of the diagram are labelled a to h. There are six shaded squares. There is a space to be completed under the grid. Clues are listed under the headings SECTION a to SECTION h.
Preamble Each of the eight sections of the labyrinth of the Aedificium contains an unclued key which, when interpreted correctly, explains how four (in one case, five) of its entries (clued using book titles and having either their starting point or most of their letters within its confines) are to be, or have been, entered. The entered forms, except for all in section b and two in c are mostly real words. The eight sections are linked by part of a strangely relevant (in many respects) quotation (ignoring the addressee) (in ODQ, but not 4th edition). The latter part of the quotation might be seen as ironically relevant. Unchecked letters in this and the key words may be arranged to give BEAK GUI, SC. A BIT PART.
Of the remaining answers, thirteen are entered normally and nineteen with a misprint of one letter, this form clued secondarily. Some proper names will be encountered, and correct forms of the misprinted letters in the grid may be arranged to make the first three words of the quotation, which three words solvers should write beneath the grid. In the six shaded squares of the grid may be traced, by contiguous squares, a link joining unclued key words and quotation.
