Preamble The grid represents some FIELDS OF ACTION. The subsidiary indication in each down clue leads tot he answer with an extra letter not entered in the grid. In clue order, these spell some key words that should help solvers identify a quotation in ODQ2345&6, the author of which is unclued at 16D. A significant part of the quotation is represented in the grid (ignoring articles and a participle) and must be highlighted. In addition, solvers must highlight something else thematic (7 letters), lurking at the end of a thematic barrier, that is uninvolved in the main action. Chambers (2003) is recommended; a proper noun at 26 can be confirmed in Brewer's.
