Title Called to the Bar
Setter Salamanca
Series The Listener
Number 3135
Date 01/02/1992
Grid 12×12 barred grid with 180° symmetry.
Preamble Each clue/answer conforms to one of the following four types: a) DOUBLES — each letter of the clued word must be doubled and then all the letters rearranged to form a new word; b) COCKTAILS — answers consist of a normal word with the addition, interrupting or otherwise, somewhere along its length of a drink (not always alcoholic), the clue defining the real word and including the drink in the secondary indications; c) SHORTS — each answer is entered one letter short (the only time it occurs in the defined word), the secondary indications leading to the entered form. The omitted letters may be arranged to form another drink. There are nine each of a, b & c. Remaining answers are d) HALVES — either the first or second half the clued word is entered (an even number of each, as may be, and a real word in each case). Solvers must determine which clue/answer is which type. Several proper names are used, and one clued word (16) is in the OED.
