Title On the Team
Setter Salamanca
Series The Listener
Number 3165
Date 29/08/1992
Grid 12×12 barred grid with 180° symmetry.
Preamble Each answer must be made to conform to one of five types:
a) HALFBACKS: either the first or second half of the normally-clued word is entered backwards;
b) FULL-BACKS: clues are normal but a are entered completely in reverse;
c) WINGERS: wings of the clued answer are entered, real words in each case (eg BUSBOY clued, BUOY entered, not BUSY or BBOY);
d) CENTRE-FORWARDS: the central part (one letter or more) of the clued word is entered first (eg the centre of CENTRAL can be seen as T, NTR or ENTRA);
e) GOAL-KEEPERS: the clued word includes (unclued) or omits a goal somewhere along its length (typically letting in more goals than are prevented!).
Few of the resulting lights from these types are real words, and solvers must determine which types are which. As a help, they will find six each of a, b and c, and nine of d and e — although one e answer could legally belong to the c category.
