The Listener
Number
3340
Date
13/01/1996
Grid
12×12 barred grid without symmetry.
Preamble
Across clues and all answers are normal. Each down clue contains one redundant word but is otherwise normal. The redundant words, in clue order, form ten definitions (one of three words, the rest of two) of words or phrases which solvers may identify as an interlinking (but asymmetric) pattern within the completed grid. All conflicts in the pattern should be treated as being resolved in the natural way. All words and phrases are in the latest edition of
Chambers English Dictionary
, except for one (in previous editions of
Chambers
and
OED
).
Solution Notes
(
Hide Solution
)
Redundant words in down clues provide definitions of words and phrases containing colours, the non-colour element being entered in the grid. Letters where two "primary" colours meet are considered to be shaded in the mixed colour belonging to the intersecting word. Thus the "C" where (blue-)STOCKING and (yellow-)DOG CONTRACT meet is to be considered green, confirmed by the intersecting (green)CARD. Solvers are expected to colour their entries; if all other colours are correct, it is assumed solvers have distinguished the "white" entry.
