Title Piano Piece
Setter Bandmaster
Series The Listener
Number 3450
Date 21/02/1998
Grid 14×14 barred grid without symmetry.
Preamble All bar seven down clues contain one extraneous word, the first letters of which spell out an entry in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. The quotation has been applied to the other seven down clues — a process which must be reversed before they can be solved. Across clues are normal, but every row in the diagram must be modified as instructed by the quotation. Numbers in brackets following across clues show the length of the relevant light, not answer. Shade the 18 s in the completed diagram, which reveal the full name of the relevant author. Punctuation may mislead.
Solution Notes
(Hide Solution)
The first letter of the extraneous words in the down clues spell out All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (to be shaded in the grid). As the title suggests, the "p" (= quiet) in each row should be moved to the west edge of the diagram. Seven down clues require an initial "p" to be moved to front of another word in the clue before they can be solved.
